PlatePass® is an automated Electronic Toll Payment Service that enables rental car customers to use high speed, cashless toll lanes to avoid having to stop and pay tolls with cash. With the exception of the E-ZPass toll roads, PlatePass is available to rental car customers without the use of a transponder (electronic device) in the vehicle.
PlatePass Toll Payment Service is currently offered by these participating rental car companies Hertz, Advantage and Toyota, and is available on some of the largest toll roads in the United States (View Locations).
California, Colorado, Florida , Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, Washington and Puerto Rico
PlatePass enables rental car customers to avoid waiting in toll lines to pay cash or coins by using FasTrak toll lanes in California (coverage not available on Express Lanes on Interstate 10, Interstate 110 and State Route 91 in Southern California), EXpressToll lanes in Colorado, the SunPass Only and E-Pass designated lanes in Florida, PeachPass lanes in Georgia, North Carolina Quick Pass, EZ TAG (non-gated) lanes in Texas, and Good to Go in Washington on State Road 520 Bridge and Tacoma Narrows Bridges only, as well as the AutoExpreso in Puerto Rico. This means that a customer renting in any state throughout the U.S., can use PlatePass while traveling on covered toll roads in California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia North Carolina, Washington and Texas. PlatePass uses a transponder in the Northeast U.S. The service will be coming soon to other major toll markets.
The PlatePass service is offered for a daily or monthly service charge, plus incurred tolls at the cash or pay-by-mail toll rate, whichever is higher, as published by the toll authority. PlatePass fees will apply if the service is used at any time during the rental period. If the rental period is multiple months and PlatePass was used in only a portion of that time fees will only be charged for the month(s) the service was used. For example, if a car is rented for a two-month period, and PlatePass was only used during the first month, the fees will not apply to the second month. All vehicles with participating rental car agencies are pre-enrolled and no advanced commitment or contract is required to use PlatePass. The toll charges are calculated electronically and charged to the same credit card that was used to rent the vehicle. The daily or monthly PlatePass fee is only charged when the rental car uses the designated toll lanes.
PlatePass identifies rental vehicles as they travel through the high-speed electronic toll collection lanes. Tolls are processed and later charged to the credit card used to rent the vehicle. Receipts will be available on www.PlatePass.com after the vehicle is returned.
Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States
Participating rental car company customers can also use PlatePass while using the E-ZPass toll roads in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region of the United States. Customers can ask for PlatePass transponders at rental locations in the Northeast, which will allow them to use the E-ZPass electronic toll payment system. The device enables high-speed electronic toll collection wherever E-ZPass is accepted – on major toll roads throughout the Northeast corridor, from Virginia to Maine, including the Chesapeake Expressway in Virginia, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, New Jersey’s Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike; the New York State Thruway, all toll bridges and tunnels into Manhattan, the Massachusetts Turnpike, the Maine Turnpike, the Ohio Turnpike, and the Illinois Tollway.
Participating rental car companies offer this service for a daily or monthly rental fee, plus incurred tolls at the cash toll rates, if PlatePass is used at any time during the rental period. If a participating rental car company vehicle is rented for a multiple month period, the PlatePass fees will only apply for the months that the PlatePass service was actually used. For example, if a car is rented for a two-month period, and PlatePass was only used during the first month, the fees will not apply to the second month.
