PlatePass® is an electronic toll payment system that enables renters to use high-speed electronic toll lanes. The PlatePass service also enables rental car customers to avoid costly toll violation fines otherwise incurred if high-speed toll lanes are used without special equipment. PlatePass is offered by participating rental car companies including Hertz throughout Colorado. When renters travel with PlatePass on the E-470, the Northwest Parkway, or the I-25 express toll lanes when driving a participating rental car company vehicle, they are protected from costly fines.

1. How does it work? | You automatically opt in to use PlatePass when you use any of the lanes on the E-470, the Northwest Parkway or I-25 EXpressToll® lanes in Colorado. The toll system identifies the car and charges the posted toll to the Rental Agreement. The Colorado toll roads are all CASHLESS. |
2. What does it cost? | You will be charged the cash or pay-by-mail toll rate, whichever is higher, as published by the toll authority, plus a service fee detailed in your rental agreement. See your rental agreement for additional information about service fees. |
3. Why am I being charged a service fee? | The fee pays for the convenience of the program. |
4. How am I charged for this service? | Tolls will be charged at the toll authority’s posted cash rate, along with a service fee that is detailed in your rental agreement. Tolls and service fees will be charged to the credit card on file with your rental car company. See your rental agreement for specific pricing information. |
5. How do I get a receipt or view my charges? | You can access a receipt online and view your toll activity at www.PlatePass.com. You will need both your rental agreement number and your rental return date. |
6. Where can I use PlatePass in Colorado? | E-470 is a 47-mile toll highway that runs along the eastern perimeter of the Denver metropolitan area. The I-25 Express Lanes include seven miles of the I-25 HOV lanes, between downtown Denver and US 36. The Northwest Parkway is a 70-mile per hour toll road that seamlessly connects the Parkway with E-470 at north I-25, and with U.S. 36 and State Highway 128 in Broomfield. |
7. Why should I use PlatePass? | Speed and convenience. |
8. What if I am paying cash and I don’t have a credit card on file? | You can still use PlatePass. A paper invoice will be sent to you approximately 2 weeks after the completion of your rental. |
9. How do I sign up for PlatePass? | Every rental car is PlatePass ready. No pre-enrollment or sign up is required. |
10. Do EXpress Toll® tag holders get a discount on the toll amount? | Renters are charged the posted toll rate. |

15. What if I have my own transponder and/or tag? | If you bring your EXpressToll® tag with you in the rental car during your trip, PlatePass will not be used or activated. If the transponder is broken or not mounted properly on the windshield, the transponder will not be activated or be read by the toll system when the customer passes through the toll lane. In this case, the customer would be charged for the toll through the PlatePass service. 16. Can I use the HOV/Express lanes on the I25? | If you have two or more people in your vehicle, you are allowed to use the HOV lanes and will not be charged a toll on I-25. However, if there are not two or more people in the rental vehicle while on I-25, you must drive through the toll express lane when passing through the clearly marked toll zones. You will be charged for this toll through the PlatePass service. If you use the HOV lanes while not carpooling, you will receive a ticket by law enforcement. If you accidentally drive through the lane designated toll lane with more than two people in the vehicle, you will still be charged the toll. |
17. Why did the violation lights trigger when I drove through the toll plaza? Will I receive a violation? | If you drive through a toll plaza, the violation lights and alarm will trigger because your rental vehicle is not equipped with an EXpressToll transponder/tag, However, no violation will be issued as the license plate that is captured on the video camera will be associated with the rental agreement and PlatePass service. |
